Things to See and Do in Townsend

 

Townsend, referred to as the "Peaceful Side of the Smokies," has a population of approximately 400, and is nestled along Little River, which flows from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park through the five mile stretch of the town.

In the immediate area of Townsend, guests enjoy fishing or tubing down the rapids of Little River, the five-mile hiking and biking trail through town, and across Townsend's unique swinging bridges, beautiful Tuckaleechee Cavernshorseback riding and golf nearby, hiking to waterfalls and wildflowers, visiting the  new Smoky Mountains Heritage Museum, visiting the Train Museum,  sightseeing along the scenic Foothills Parkway and throughout the National Park and Cades Cove.

In addition to the excellent small arts & crafts shops, there are several large craft fairs throughout the year. Bikes, tubes and other equipment is available for rent in Townsend. Restaurants, grocery stores, and kennel services are available in Townsend and Walland, as well.

Gatlinburg is a 30-minute drive through the National Park, along scenic Rt. 73; Pigeon Forge and Dollywood are only 20 minutes away through beautiful Wears Valley on Rt. 321.
